During my travel I CHOSE to read the book by Irene Khan : The Unheard Truth: Poverty and Human Right. I could not sleep over a week while reading this book. I made some notes out of this reading and thought of sharing with my readers.

She has used World Bank statistics in her book but she is vocal on the issue of human rights violations by the development discourse of the World Bank. Her message to the readers and follower alike is : DEMAND DIGNITY. There has been many tools and institutions to work on the supply of justice but the poorest of the poor do not have access to that. The keyword is ACCESS. Irene cites her own case of having access to education vs his own childhood friend without the access to education.

Based on the data of a billion people living on the slums she exposed the mockery of the development discourse of the 21st century. In order to solve this challene she suggests that the housing policies need to be built by listening to the target groups.

Though she believes on the Market Mechanism but she has a view that Government must ensure equal access for the population these basic rights: health, education and security. The far cry of the data on maternity and assoicated mortality in the range of half a million– she demands Right to safe motherhood. And the tool is to have access to health. According to her maternity is not an illness but still we have not been able to solve this crisis.

She quotes President Roosevelt in saying ‘Freedom from want not only from fear’. Freedom from want and freedom from fear go side by side. She believes in empowerment rather than enrichment of the people. I think she has turned the coin towards poverty where Human Right was an isolated notion in the past. According to her they are the two sides of the same coin…

I have been interacting and observing with Finnish Innovation system and the country culture with reference to the entrepreneurship.
In my view this country does not tolerate failure as it is prevalent in Japan where people committ suicided if they fail in theri new venture development. In my view failing forward is the only way to succeed
which makes Silicon Valley the most innovative centre of the world. In Finland, various technology parks and state money
has been pumped including the state funded venture arm Veraventure but without satisfactory result. In various discussions with innovation experts they pinpoint the culture of the country as a challenge.
They ask the questions as following:

1. Do we nurture diversity or despise it?

2. Do we celebrate failure as next success path or reject the failed entrepreneurs?

3. Are we run by the market economics or state subsidies?

4. Are we just creating patents or commercializing it?

Answers to the above mentioned questions suggest that just copying the models from Silicon Valley without building the culture to appreciate failing forward–success is a distant future. Recently Russia has initiated this copycat models of Silicon Valley without understanding the need to build educational systems and country culture.

Japan has initiated such top-down innovation experiments without a real breakthrough for decades. The after war success stories of multinationals faded away. On the other hand China has invested heavily on the R&D and patenting has evolved pretty well but the innovation has faltered.

Let us look at US innovation system on the other hand. This country thrives in innovation when there is recession is there. More than half of all Silicon Valley start-ups created in the past recession turned out to be a great success. Innovation experts are betting that the same history will be repeated in the
future as well.

According to Vivek Wadhwa, the lesson that other regions need to learn from Silicon Valley is to glorify and embrace their failed entrepreneurs. Countries such as Germany, Japan, France, and India need to change their laws to allow high-tech companies to be started and shut down more easily. Their leaders need to work toward removing the stigma associated with failure. Their public needs to be educated to understand that, in the high-tech world at least, experimentation and risk-taking are the paths to success; that success is often preceded by one or more failures. This must be discussed frequently by political leaders and taught in schools. They should establish venture funds for entrepreneurs who are starting their second or third businesses after failing.

Vivek’s conclusions generates a compelling hypothesis for Finnish start-up ecosystem to embark into and making the future success stories from the Finnish garages.

Dear All,

(Dr. Frits Pannekoek, President of International Council for Open and Distance Education and President of
Athabasca University, Australia )

1. Passionate about the business idea

2. Pivoting business model to have unique value proposition

3. Creating that makes all the TEAM proud of it!!

4. CEO is a Good Leader

5. CEO is visible all the time!!

We pivoted so far and we are pivoting for the next new curve in the industry. Value creation and value capturing through partners is an ongoing process!!

Keep innovating!!

Recent media speculation about Nokia has been one of a first types in whole history of Nokia. Being an ex-Nokian, I followed these speculations closely. Anssi, the last remaining member of Jorma’s diamond team, said goodbye to Nokia. Jorma announced that he will be stepping down after this term in 2012. New CEO is on-board. As all other analysts and well wishers for Nokia, I do not have the solution and I do not want to attempt on providing that either. Still, I started to collect the domains that I am going to explore together with others so that in six months time I will be able to provide some recommendations.

Following questions emerged:

1. WHICH OPERATING SYSTEM?

2. MOBILE OPERATOR BASED VS. OVI STORE BASED STRATEGY?

3. SEGMENTATION STRATEGY?

4. WHAT KIND OF INNOVATION IN SOFTWARE TO CAPTURE?

5. NEXT CURVE OF SMART PHONES?

6. ADVERTISE?

It was a great experience to participate on the annual seminar of KIOS with the theme: DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS FOR DEVELOPMENT. This time KIOS had partnered with DEMO Finland to combine the voice and have even better impact. This was an unique approach to seek utility on the boundaries of the stakeholders. Democracy and Human Rights go side by side. The countries in focus from developing world were Nepal, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania. Participants from the developed world included ministers and researches. One of the interesting sessions was Ensuring Human Rights in Finnish Democracy by Ms. Maija Sakslin, Parliamentary Deputy-Ombudsman. Many of the participants heard first time about such Ombudsman. This shows that Finland is attempting to walk the talk not only talk.

One of the countries in focus was Nepal and the delegates presented Children’s Parliament to Youth Vision. On the other hand Sri Lankan experience on denial of Human Rights for the minorities shook the conscience of the participants. The other country in Focus was Rwanda where the discussions focused on EQUAL participation and development for all.

During the closing part there were three workshops:

1. Youth’s right to participation and development–Best Practices

2. Women’s Right to Participation and Development–Best Practices

3. Global Economic Structures and Right to Participation–

I participated on the 3rd group. The session was raising concerns on the POLITICAL WILL of the country for example Finland to do sanctions for the countries who violate human rights. Company’s ethical practices were the major concerns!! The notion that I put on the discussion was the CREATIVE CAPITALISM (Please look into my previous post on this topic) There were opposing views just because the phrase was coined by Bill Gates and he is pursuing this in his new part of life after Microsoft. What fascinates me about this notion is that it is giving an alternative to donate the best creative workforce’s 5-7 percent of their time. ThinkITGlobal has enabled the voice of the common volunteers. Bills & Melinda Gates Foundation is focusing in preventive mechanism rather than cure and I subscribe to that notion fully. There has been concerns about the ethical practices for sure!!

Therefore, I passionately wait for next year’s Seminar!!

While reading the recent book Bannana in Russia by Martti Vallila, I validated the following lessons learned from Steve Blank:

If you don’t teach it or write it down, the accumulated knowledge of your career is gone.
War stories about your career can be entertainment, or even better if you want to teach, make them the basis of a strategy and methodology worth passing on.
Retirement doesn’t have to be only about golf and skiing.

In this book Martti explains how Russians with potentially transformational technologies can first protect and then launch their technologies into the outside world and how FINLAND can have competitive advantage in facilitating that. Vallila writes:
Finland, a country of 5 million, with a long boarder and history with Russia, is blessed with few natural resources and must rely on the resourcefulness of her people to create wealth. Finland is in a position to provide what Russia needs: trusted, transparent access to the world market, an incubator of technologies, developer of prototypes. Finland has historically played the lucrative role of middleman between the dollar and ruble zone in the days of the Cold War, when the Soviet Union was Finland’s largest trading partner.

What mesmerized me the most is the following statement:

Quiet, reserved Finland makes a potentially efficient “gear-box” between mysterious, complex Russia, and the outside world.

Personally, I have never thought this possibility. I really thank the author in opening my eyes about this “gear-box” possibilities for Finland and SITRA has published a report from Trade to Partnership. Mr. Vallila has made a good reference of “The Russia Action Plan” published by Government of Finalnd. The emphasis on this report is in the area of close co-operation in the field of innovation.

My interest area in the book was on the competitive advantage angle for Finland and Martti’s conclusions in this chapter might wake up the brains of Finland as well:

Business Lessons in Martti’s words:

• Small, trusted neighbors with complimentary skills, are often the best partners for practical steps forward.
• There is great risk of “thinking small” if you are not big.
• The small should not be afraid to think big where they have a unique contribution.

Any comments and suggestions are welcome! The new frontier has just begun!!

According to Mr. Vallila, Russia has experienced a tumultuous 18 years, has emerged stable and confident, and faces its moment of truth: does she recoil into the stable state of a banana republic of oil and gas or does
she step forward, enter the global village, and contribute her considerable talents to the game of integrated human progress?
He concludes:
There is clearly a right answer.

Bill Gates has contributed on a best selling book on Creative Capitalism inspired by his new voice in philanthropy: Bills & Melinda Gates Foundation. There has been various reviews of the book out of which I picked two reviews here to discuss this new corporate philosophy.

Harvard Magazine published an article discussing about Gates vision. It writes that
Gates challenged businesses to go beyond giving cash or matching employees’ charitable contributions. Instead, he said, companies should devote 5 percent of their innovative people resources to solving the problems of the world’s poor—who are their future customers.

In my view, there has been corporate social responsibility areas being discussed all the time in press but the real contribution is very low. Therefore, this call is timely. Social entrepreneurship driven by the need of the bottom of the pyramid as coined by C. K. Prahalad, might be a plausible solution.

Time Magazine mentioned that
As C.K. Prahalad shows in his book The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid, there are markets all over the world that businesses have missed. One study found that the poorest two-thirds of the world’s population has some $5 trillion in purchasing power.

I would comment on this by repeating creative capitalism is the only solution and supporting the cause with the mission: “All lives have equal value”. Gates has mentioned in his blog that one idea is to dedicate a percentage of their top innovators’ time to issues that affect the people who have been left behind. This kind of contribution takes the brainpower that makes life better for the richest and dedicates some of it to improving the lives of everyone else. According to him some pharmaceutical companies, like Merck and GlaxoSmithKline, are already doing this. The Japanese company Sumitomo Chemical shared some of its technology with a Tanzanian textile company, helping it produce millions of bed nets, which are crucial tools in the fight to eradicate malaria. Other companies are doing the same in food, cell phones and banking.

The call for billionaires to join hands with Gates has just begun. Warren Buffett has been already with Gates but others are also joining the bandwagon. Let us hope that this firm belief will bring value to all lives no matter where they are born!

Governments can play a great role on their part as well! Creative capitalism is based on creativity. Therefore, innovation in technology only is not what we are seeking we are seeking an economy based on creativity, the true manifestation of human intellect! The FairTrade concept is spreading fast and if consumers also support such companies supporting the real cause of the society, we will have better world waiting for all lives! Choice is ours!

Gates said that he is there to help create a world where no one has to live on a dollar a day or die from a disease we know how to prevent. Creative capitalism can help make it happen. I hope more people will join the cause.
Will You?

The acronym, PESTEL and Mr. Blair’s impact on cleanTech industry is the main summary of my reading so far. ‘P’ stands for political factors where I do not have to write anything else than that Blair has been working on cleanTech policy making while he was in power. ‘E’ stands for Economic factors where the new investment wave of investment and hence the policy making in this area will make great impact for the future of this cleantech eco-system. ‘S’ stands for Social factors where Mr. Blair’s social activism coupled with his long political career will propel the whole Khosla Venture’s brand image. This is invaluable in deed. ‘T’ stands for Technological factors and Mr. Blair is one of the leaders who understands the power of the renewable multiple of Technology to solve the inequities we have been facing since a long time. The other ‘E’ stands for Environmental Factors and we do not need words to explain this as the whole advising he is going to give for Khosla Ventures is in this area. ‘L’ stands for Legal factors where Mr. Blair brings a legacy of making free market economy socially responsible and now the component is to be added is environmentally responsible market economy. I will revisit this blog in a year or so to see the delta impact he will generate for the Khosla Ventures based on public knowledge though!!

While going through various sources for the basis of competing for the future, I came to the following 4 aspects in general: Crisis as an opportunity, energy as a variable to monitor, global citizenship and VCR. There are other issues also but the major area we are focusing now in our meetings with born global clients were only four. Please feel free to contradict or comment…let the debate begin!

Every Crisis has an Opportunity:

Various experts might think recession is bad but there is a silver lining if you can look into it deeply. There is a huge opportunity to do R&D ramp-up or stop a while and buy-in time to catch up with the latest trend in R&D. Also, M&A opportunities await for the prepared minds. Therefore, current market circumstances are in your favor–You just need to have the new perspective. No matter what–R&D must continue.

ENERGY AS A VARIABLE TO MONITOR
Energy market analysts are predicting that oil prices might remain strong but gas prices will be in pressure. The emergence of alternative energy has not been able to conquer the economics of supply and demand and subsidy to support those energy security options will not prevail rather market mechanisms will prevail. Having said that new innovations on cleaner coal technology and alternative energy of gas powered plants and other mechanism will be strong in coming years. Solar might be viable in 10-20 years time if the prices go down substantially through new technological innovations. Huge VC money has been pumped into this area but the result needs to be seen. The major variable in oil industry is the OPEC production volume and that is under such a CARTEL that it might be supporting the CARTEL goal any way…Iraq is still a volatile variable in OIL Equation!

Global Citizenship in DNA
In this ‘global citizen’ based world, we need to forget the national image and rather create a truly multicultural-multinational culture where merit is the only variable that makes you successful. Such culture is the synonym for success while raging war for TALENT and INNOVATION. Remember! every culture has good things and we need to appreciate that. Many CEOs have admitted that the enthusiasm and productivity from offshore locations have surprised them. Please wake up WEST!

Value Creation and Renewal: Born Global
How you build the best multinational: the formula prescribed by many is having right values in place and making sure that the values are practiced as preached. Nevertheless, I am fond of saying that a culture where technology as only renewable multiple might bring the organization to next level. I might be little bit biased with technology here but that is the crux of new innovation and also for the productivity improvement. For sure, make sure that job security and ethical guidelines are cornerstones for your company–then the TALENT war and INNOVATION war keeps functioning but well-functioning feedback loop for continuous improvement is needed.

In summary, value creation and renewal in parallel to capture the value must be in place to be successful in global context enabled by sound values and culture nurturing the technological breakthrough!
